■Stdies in The Beatles No.2 THE BEATLES IN JAPANESE EDUCATION |

How They Treated in Historical and Social StudiesIn textbooks of "MUSIC" used in Japanese high schools and junior high, some songs of the Beatles have been treated as educational subjects for more then 20 years. On the other hand, some textbooks of English education contain the stories of FAB 4. As a high school teacher of World History and other Social Studies, I will report you the "Beatle" situation in Japan. There is a national standard for education in Japan and all the textbooks which are used in primary schools, junior high and high school must be written along it. The last change of the standard was made in 1994. And new textbooks were edited. And for my pleasure, there appeared many textbooks of the "World History" which wrote about The Beatles. Not in easy columns but as a "Histrical Figure". So I made a table below. In 7 textbooks among 25, almost 1/3 of all, we can find the name of the Beatles and John Lennon. Especially, a textbook (Sanseido "Syoukai Sekaisi") wrote about John Lennon as an "antiwar" thinker. It's a uniqe view. I have used Beatles' songs for my "World History" and "Modern Society" class for a long time. For example, "Help!" is good for the explanation of difficulties and complications of teenagers and Wings' "Give Ireland Back To The Irish" is very useful for the study about "Irish troubles in the UK". Anyway there appears the young generation who STUDY the Beatles in their class rooms. The time has changed. We, the teachers, have got to carry that weight of responsibility to pass the Beatles on to the next generation as a human heritage. But we must never spoil their rebellious spirit.
